What is laughable is the mention of the forward planning on the article on the DES website where the DES has identified areas of population growth. The fact is that from 1982 to 2010 Tramore’s population grew from 5600 to over 9000. In that time no permanent school building was built in Tramore. Tramore is no longer seen as a growing area so does not get priority compared to new areas of projected growth like Kildare and Meath. Hence we will languish indefinitely forgotten in prefabs while other areas will have schools built immediately.

According to the DES website 26 projects were completed in 2009. As there are currently 1200 applications for major building projects submitted by schools we can safely say that the current school accommodation crisis in will be addressed by 2060. That is if no new project application is submitted.

This directive had applied to those schools who had decided not to teach English in Junior Infants but pick up on the curriculum in Senior Infants. These schools found that there were no adverse effects to English literacy scores.

Gaelscoil Philib Barún however, like many other gaelscoileanna, does teach English for the designated period from Junior Infants.

Gaelscoileanna can choose when they feel it is most beneficial to introduce the English curriculum. Many schools differ and research is still being gathered regarding the merits of different approaches. It is a decision now for each school community to make. The directive had denied that right.

D’eirigh go glic leis an Aire an cheist a sheachaint. Tá’s ag an saol nach féidir leis an Aonad Tógála sa Roinn na foirgnimh a sheachadh de réir éilimh. Ní raibh siad riamh in ann fiú agus an tír ag snámh san airgead. Níor bhuail an súnamí daonra go fóill agus tá an tAire ag caint faoi mhargadh a bhfuair sé sa ghiobalshiopa áitiúl ag ceannach buicéad agus sluasad.

The Minister dodged the issue quite cleverly. The delivery of projects by the DES has always been problematic. When the money was there they could not deliver. There are too few projects progressing too slowly in light of the demand already there for buildings. The population tsunami approaches while the Minister boasts about the great value he got in the local novelty shop buying his shovel and bucket.

Nicky was indeed a well known and very popular figure within the Gaelscoil community. He was best known in our family for being the only parent who got to bring their very own 5-a-side soccer team to school with them each day, a task which Nicky so clearly enjoyed. His loss is tragic beyond words.
